Alder is the Elite 4 champion.

Alder is the most powerful trainer in the Unova region, being the region's champion. He is well loved by the people of the region and he likes instilling inspiration into the hearts of trainers, especially young ones. It is revealed that prior to the game's story he lost one of his Pokemon to an illness. This caused him a lot of grief, so much that he left the league and wandered the region instead.

Role within the game

Alder is the Elite 4 champion. He makes his first appearance in the game after you defeat Brycen in Nimbasa City, where he is introduced to you and Cheren in a small festival on Route 5. You will encounter him again in various locations throughout the main quest - and like Lance before him, he seems to have a thing for teaching aspiring challengers about what it means to be a trainer. He will also give the player HM03 Surf.

Oddly enough, you don't get to face him at the end of the main quest - as by the time you reach him, his entire team was taken out by N and a reawakened Legendary Dragon. When you re-challenge the Elite Four though, he will be there to take you on.
