Japanese Name: Hōen-chihō

Hoenn is a large region to the Southwest of Johto. It's Japanese name, Hōen means 'Abundant relations' and indeed, Hoenn seems to focus on the relationship between people, Pokemon and nature. Many towns and cities, such as Fortree City and Pacifidlog Town are built around nature. Hoenn is one of the greenest regions and is also one of the wettest, with many water routes dividing up the land. This being said, Hoenn is a very warm place, even boasting a desert. All in all, it is a very diverse and interesting region, with it's heart firmly resting within Nature.

Pokémon Available

Hoenn and its new Pokédex brought along 135 brand new Pokemon. Unlike with the previous region of Johto, which had many Pokemon related to those in Kanto, Hoenn Pokemon remained unrelated - separate.

Version Differences

Pokemon Emerald features a few areas which can't be found in Ruby and Sapphire. One place of great importance, the Battle Frontier, is found only in the Emerald version. Other locations include: Trainer Hill, Artisan Cave, Desert Underpass, Mirage Tower, Marine Cave and Terra Cave.

Animated sprites also return, and Rayquaza is the focus of the plot as opposed to Groudon or Kyogre. Many other differences are abundant in the third part of the series, and can be found at the appropriate pages.

Characters

Many new characters can be found within the Hoenn Region.

Gym Leaders

• Roxanne is the first gym leader and can be found in Rustboro City. She specialises in Rock-type Pokemon.
• Brawly is the second gym leader who resides in Dewford Town. He is a trainer of Fighting-type Pokemon.
• Wattson is the third gym leader and lives in Mauville City. He trains Electric-types.
• Flannery is the fourth gym leader. She trains Fire-types and is found in Lavaridge City.
• Norman is gym leader number five and lives in Petalburg City. He is a trainer of Normal-types.
• Winona is the sixth gym leader. Living in Fortree City, she is a master of Flying-types.
• Tate and Liza are the seventh gym leaders. They dwell in Mossdeep City and challenge you with Psychic-type Pokemon.
• The eighth gym leader depends on your game. In Ruby and Sapphire you'll face Wallace, while in Emerald you'll face Juan. Both train Water-type Pokemon and their gym can be found in Sootopolis City.

Elite Four

• Sidney will face you with an array of Dark-types.
• Phoebe has a team of Ghost-type Pokemon.
• Glacia battles with Ice-type Pokemon.
• Drake's team consists of powerful Dragon-types.
• If you are playing Ruby or Sapphire the Hoenn League Champion will be Steven who loves Steel-types. Emerald will mean you face off against Wallace and his Water-types.
