Pokédex 3D is a free downloadable app, exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS and available from the Nintendo eShop.

Mere days before the Nintendo 3DS eShop launched in North America and Europe, it was announced that a free and exclusive Pokémon app by the name of Pokédex 3D would be available on the eShop from day one.
Like its name suggests, Pokédex 3D is a Pokédex app that displays Pokémon with 3D models. Augmented Reality and the 3DS cameras are also utilized to bring the Pokémon into the real world, allowing players to snap pictures of them by usage of AR Markers. The more Pokémon you scan with the AR Viewer and take pictures of, the more Stickers you receive which in turn unlock new customization features to use in your photos. Some restrictions do apply, and Pokémon you haven't yet obtained in your Pokédex will show up as silhouettes when scanned with the AR Viewer.
Pokédex 3D currently features all 153 officially revealed Pokémon from Black and White, from Victini to Kyurem, as well as their various formes. When the game is first downloaded players only have access to 16 different Pokémon. However, they're able to expand their collections through a variety of ways: SpotPass, local wireless trading, and collecting stickers of unknown Pokémon.
As previously mentioned, the app includes a variety of features. Each major feature has been detailed below, some of which that include separate pages for further information.
The Pokédex offers a huge amount of information, from 'dex descriptions to detailed move lists. Pokédex 3D even describes the base stats of each Pokémon, but with bars instead of numbers. Players use the bottom screen to scroll through the Pokédex information, while the top screen displays an image of the Pokémon in beautiful 3D. Each Pokémon can perform a unique animation, which is triggered by pressing your A button or clicking the action button on your touch screen.
Pokémon entries can be organised in a variety of ways, such as Name, Number, Height, and Weight. In addition, an advanced Search option allows you to quickly locate your Pokémon of choice. The app also includes a Move Dex. The Move Dex, which can be accessed by clicking any move, describes the techniques in greater detail, including which Pokémon learn the move and how they learn it. It can be organised by Name or Attack Power, and also includes an advanced Search feature.
You may register up to 16 Pokémon and 16 Moves in your bookmarks via the Menu screen. Two more options found in the Menu, Scene and Window, allow you to aesthetically customize your Pokédex. In particular, changing your background allows you to view the Pokémon models in different lighting.
Near the top of each Pokémon’s Pokédex info, you'll find an AR Marker. These AR Markers are used to display the Pokémon models in the real world via the AR Viewer. If a Pokémon has multiple formes, it will also have a unique AR Marker for each forme.
While the AR Markers can't be directly saved or printed out from your games, they're very basic designs that can be easily recreated in an art program like MS Paint. For a full list of the currently existing AR Markers, check out our page found here.
Through usage of the 3DS cameras, Augmented Reality, and the Pokémon AR Markers, the AR Viewer allows you to view and take pictures of your Pokédex models in the real world. Accessing and using the AR Viewer is simple. Go to the Menu, click on the "AR Viewer" button, and point your 3DS's external cameras at a Pokémon AR Marker. Position yourself and your AR Marker(s) appropriately, and press L or R to snap a picture (or tap the touch screen's camera button). That's all there is to it.
The AR Viewer offers multiple options for interacting with the Pokémon and customizing your pictures, but the majority of these features aren't available from the get-go. In the beginning all you'll be able to do is use the action button to have a Pokémon perform their animation. As you collect more stickers in your Sticker Book, the amount things you can do increases. The amount of Pokémon you're able to display at once also depends on how many stickers you've collected. By default you may display 8 Pokémon at a time, but you're able to increase that number to 11.
Pokémon not yet obtained in your Pokédex are displayed as silhouettes when viewed through the AR Viewer (unless they're one of six exceptions). Scanning Unknown Markers can play a role in which Pokémon you're more likely to receive via SpotPass (see below for further details).
The Sticker Book allows you to keep track of every Pokémon you've viewed via the AR Viewer, and which one's you've taken pictures of. It's accessed via the Menu, but clicking a sticker on a Pokémon’s Pokédex page will also take you there.
Stickers are broken up into AR Stickers (Pokémon you've scanned via the AR Viewer) and Photo Stickers (Pokémon you've taken pictures of). Increasing the amount stickers within your Sticker Book unlocks a variety of features and upgrades for the AR Viewer. While the totals for AR Stickers and Photo Stickers are displayed separately, both numbers are combined when calculating your total number of stickers collected. This total does not include Unknown Markers you've collected.
The milestones to unlock each new feature look like this:
| Stickers | Unlocked Feature or Upgrade |
| 30 | The "Note" button is unlocked, which makes a Pokémon use their cry. |
| 50 | Unlocks the ability to use saved photos as a background. |
| 70 | Allows you to display 9 Pokémon at once. |
| 100 | Unlocks the Scale Settings menu, which lets you adjust a Pokémon’s size. |
| 150 | Unlocks the Stopwatch. This pauses a Pokémon in mid-action. |
| 200 | Allows you to display 10 Pokémon at once. |
| 250 | Allows you to display 11 Pokémon at once. |
As mentioned above, players only have access to 16 different Pokémon when they first download the app. These 16 include the following:

There are two major ways to obtain new Pokémon for Pokédex 3D. This includes using SpotPass, and locally trading with another player. You're also able to collect unknown AR Markers to influence which Pokemon are received from SpotPass. However, six specific Pokémon are able to be unlocked immediately upon viewing their AR Markers; all of which are legendaries.
StreetPass and online trading are not available for this game.
Pokédex 3D offers the usage of SpotPass technology to continuously update your Pokédex collection. SpotPass may be turned on or off via the Menu screen, but chances are you'll want to keep it turned on at all times. Three new Pokémon can be added to your Pokédex collection via SpotPass per day. Each day, when you first start up your game, you'll be presented with a message explaining that new data has been found. Select "Yes" to okay the download. You may then receive up to two more new Pokémon by simply shutting and reopening your 3DS.
In typical Pokémon fashion, you're able to trade Pokédex information with others via local wireless. To do so, simply go into your Menu options and select either Give to transfer your Pokémon data or Get to receive new data. It doesn't get more straightforward than that.
If you scan an unknown Pokémon with the AR Viewer, you'll receive a sticker of its AR Marker in your Sticker Book. These stickers may not count towards your total stickers collected, but they do play a role concerning which Pokémon you may obtain each day. When an Unknown Marker exists within your Sticker Book, you have a greater chance of receiving that Pokémon from SpotPass.
However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when using this method. First, you may not receive Pokemon related to the Unknown Markers you've logged 100% of the time. Having their markers simply raises your chances of such occurring. Second, if there are specific Pokémon you're aiming to unlock, don't go crazy scanning a bunch of unknown AR Markers. All you'll end up doing is lessening your chances of receiving what you really wanted.
While you'll have to rely on SpotPass and Trading to receive the majority of your new Pokémon, six exceptions exist - all of the legendary variety. If you scan the AR Markers of the following six legendary Pokémon with your AR Viewer, you'll automatically receive their data in your Pokédex. Each of them comes with a pause feature unlocked on their Pokédex entries.
Here are the six you can immediately obtain (and no, the Flying-type trio and Kyurem aren't included):
