Shaking Areas

Rare or unusual Pokemon can be found here (Look next to the player)

Like in previous games, Pokemon can usually be found in the tall grass, caves and waters of the game. These patches contain certain Pokemon, whom you can battle and catch. However, Unova is special. While in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum certain areas allowed you to encounter two Pokemon at once, this is now possible anywhere. You'll notice grass that is darker than the standard grass - these patches have high chances of finding two Pokemon simultaneously. As with the previous games, you can only capture a Pokemon if the other has been knocked out.

Shaking Area Types

As well as special grass, Black and White introduces a new feature - shaking areas. These special tiles hide Pokemon not usually seen in the route. These 'events' don't happen often, but if you do find one, you'll always find a Pokemon within them.

These tiles aren't limited to grass. If the tile is not grass, you may find an item instead of a Pokemon.

The shaking areas are;

  • Grass ~ Grass gets larger and shakes violently
  • Cave ~ A little patch of dirt appears as if something is digging below.
  • Water ~ The head of a Pokemon appears above the surface, or an item floating
  • Bridges ~ Shadow falls on the bridge

Once you have the National Dex, this is a great method for finding Pokemon from previous generations.
