Message from the Author:

Once again, a new generation is upon us, and once again I’m going to review the buggers. But not just the new ones. This time, I am going to revisit every Pokemon, commenting on them with my heightened experience, and in light of their 4th Gen changes. So, my loyal readers, join me as we start the journey to discover my views on the monsters of Shino. (And my views on anything that may pop up on the way!)

~Nemesis

(And you'll find my comments as well as some insertions included in italics of this colour, we both hope you enjoy this insight into our views on all 493 Pokemon and if you have any comments to make - please do so via the Forums - Doctor Oak)

Part 1: Generation IV

#387 - Naetle

It’s a cute little snapping turtle! It does look a bit goofy, but I do like this guy. Very Chicoritary, but in a good way. I’d need to see it in the anime, but I imagine seeing it biting on things with that big jaw would be cool.

#388 - Hayashigame

Awesome, very awesome. I think I prefer this to Grovyle, though jumping and slashing things is cool. Seems to be going away from the turtle theme, towards the now staple theme for grass type starters…

#389 - Dodaitoise

A dinosaur. Again. But, this one is good. My favourite grass starter evolution so far. Nice to see another dual type, and it isn’t poison either, which is good to see. Just a note, Grass/Ground starter = My Idea. =P The first of many taken from the Nem Gen (See below). Anyways, I do like the island on the back thing. Took me a while to recognise the spikes as mountains though.

The Nem Gen

As many Pokemon fans have, across the span of the fandom history, Nemesis has forayed into the Fan Pokemon genre in the past. These Pokemon were often borne out of a basic, simple idea, such as a mermaid or an electric squirrel, and created visually by a blend of many Pokemon sprites to create a final image almost completely indiscernible as any particular mesh of Pokemon. These are a few of those original meshes.

Bloomatops: Grass/Ground starter final evo
Cooster: Fighting/Flying
Squirai: Electric
Ryna: Water
KodoWoodo: Rock/Ground, Sudowoodo Pre-Evo
Scing: Poison
Hedgey: Normal/Ground?

#390 - Hikozaru

Hm, still not too sure. It does look rather quirky, but I’m not to keen on the flaming rear end. Move wise, nothing special. Staple fire starter. Just as a note, one of very few fire types in the game. In fact, only Ponyta is available in any other way other than being a starter or legend. (Before the National Dex anyway.)

#391 - Mokazaru

Blah, I can live with it. I don’t really like the blue stripe over the eyes. It was a bit of a disappointment to find it is fire/fighting. Psychic or something different would have been nice, but whatever.

#392 - Gokazaru

Now, I do like this one. I think I almost prefer it to Blaziken. It might be the gold armour, not too sure. He could have been a psychic type, but fighting probably fits the move set a bit more. I like the flaming hair too, better than the arse fire.

#393 - Pochama

OMGZ! Someone froze a Torchic! I do like it though, it’s cute. It could have been water/ice, but I suppose that would make it a bit unfair as a starter. Drill Peck is an instant win for me too.

#394 - Pottaishi

Like Mokazaru, I can live with it for 20 or so levels, but I wasn’t that impressed. Still pure water, but looks a bit owl like to me. I could imagine it sliding over ice on its tummy, which would be quite cool. (If you excuse the pun)

#395 - Emperuto

Now, this I do like. I can’t really see where the steel type comes from, but meh. I like the claws coming from behind the wings, as shown on the Sugimori art, they make it look menacing. Shame it does not learn any ice attacks naturally, and that both attack stats are rather average. The final form type triangle is interesting this time though, which I will talk about now.

The Fourth Generation Starter Battle

In the past three generations, the starter type triangle has remained more or less the same. (With part exception to Blaziken and Swampert) This time however, the new types add new strengths and weaknesses.

Dodaitoise Vs Gokazaru- In the past three generations, the fire starter has always held the upperhand against the grass types. However, this time, Dodaitoise has Earthquake to take out the Goku Monkey. Though, with any luck, Gokazaru’s speed and special attack should be able to deal with the island turtle/dino fairly effectively.
Dodaitoise Vs Emperuto- Now, the Mecha Knight Penguin manages to claw back a normal resistance to grass attacks with its steel type, but once again Dodaitoise’s ground type rescues it. With Emperuto’s poor defense, and Dodaitoise’s high attack, Earthquake could be nasty. However, if Emperuto gets any ice attacks via TM, it could cause a slight problem.
Gokazaru Vs Emperuto- Normal fire damage to Emperuto, but high special defense could help for special attacks but physical ones would be a disaster. As usual, Gokuzaru fears the water, but this time he has the advantage that fighting beats steel. That’s both types that hold an advantage over the big penguin.

#396 - Mukkuru

Standard starter bird really. Three forms, and some nice attacks. Visually, pretty standard, but I prefer it to Tailow, whose move set it steals completely.

#397 - Mukkubird

Not bad, standard starter bird evo. Meh-ish stats, and intimidate. Could have been worse, but could have also been better.

#398 - Mukuhawk

It’s got a big scythe on it’s head! I’d need to see it in the anime properly, but it seems a bit small to me, doesn’t give me the sense of size Pidgeot does. Nice to see a three form birdy again too.

#399 - Bippa

Rattata, Sentret, Zigagzoon, Bippa. It even has Rattata’s teeth! Nice movepool though, I like rollout so early, and combined with Defense Curl it could be useful early on.

#400 - Beadar

Apart from learning Water Gun, being Normal/Water is a bit pointless. It looks kind of dopey, but hey, I probably look dopey too sometimes. Its not like it would get used much anyway.

#401 - Koroboshi

So the Volbeat/Illumise love child is more useless than we thought. Atleast Magikarp evolved in to something much better after not having any moves. It’s design makes me wonder if it was at one time meant to debut in RS with the other two beetle things. (It’s a beetle. Not a grass hopper. The Pokedex LIES!)

#402 - Korotokku

It’s a mantis. With a moustache. We will see another new Pokemon with a big moustache later. Scissor Cross is good, I hear, but it seems like your average bug to me.

#403 - Korink

I do like electric types, but it’s a bit bright. Nice to see another three form electric line too. I will no doubt be using it eventually.

#404 - Rukushio

Korink’s evolved form. I like the tail, and the colour scheme is a bit more eye pleasing. Seems a little like Manetric Mark II though.

#405 - Rentora

Now this is cool. The pose reminds me of Absol for some reason, but that’s no bad thing. I like the mane, but it’s stats are disappointing. Higher Special Attack would have been better for Special Electric and Dark moves like Crunch, but I guess making it a physical attacker will be easier now the categories are chosen by attack.
