Gimmighoul was first revealed following the 5th November Classic Community Day in Pokémon Go. Golden Pokéstops handing out the golden coins Gimmighoul is seen with started appearing in the world, with Gimmighoul following you after collecting one and guiding you to further Pokéstops with more coins. Professors Willow and Jacq then followed this up with a conversation released on the 6th November, indicating that only the Roaming Form Gimmighoul were appearing in the Pokémon Go world, whilst both forms are common in the Paldea Region.

Gimmighoul’s Chest Form, which is styled after a classic RPG monster, the treasure-chest impersonating Mimic, has a fairy tale associated with it in the Paldea Region. Gimmighoul in the form can will people to collect the golden coins they seek for them, until they collect 999 of them. This was demonstrated over the day or so of teasing Gimmighoul’s announcement by a Pokemon.com microsite showing Gimmighoul’s chest (sans Gimmighoul) steadily filling up with the Golden Coins as players in Pokémon Go collected them.

Gimmighoul’s Roaming Form carries a single coin on it’s back, and is much more nimble and agile than it’s bulky Chest Form. As a result, it’s claimed that not a single Trainer in the Paldea Region has ever been able to catch one one in this form.

When Pokémon Go and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet’s ability to connect with one another is rolled out in 2023, it is expected that this will allow players to catch Roaming Form Gimmighoul in Pokémon Go. This connection will not allow players to directly send Pokémon from Pokémon Go to Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, however, so it’s unclear how this might affect being able to catch Roaming Form Gimmighoul within Pokémon Scarlet & Violet also.
