Pokémon Scarlet & Violet cleared 20 million copies sold in just one month

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet appear on track to potentially be the best-selling Pokémon games ever after shifting over 20 million copies in just a little over one month. That’s nearly double the amount of copies that Pokémon Legends Arceus sold in that time last year and already puts it within arm’s length of Pokémon Sword and Shield’s latest revised total of over 25m copies sold.

As of today, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is already the 5th best-selling group of Pokémon games ever released, with only Gold & Silver, Sword & Shield and Red, Green & Blue’s combined totals ahead of it.

With Pokémon’s standard “long-tail” of sales (even 2019’s Sword & Shield still sold a further million copies since Nintendo’s last financial update late last year) and the expectation of DLC and further updates to be announced for Scarlet & Violet later this month, there’s a clear path ahead for Scarlet & Violet to potentially break all records for the franchise.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch itself has sold over 122 million units, finally moving it clear of the Game Boy’s 118m sales to become their second most successful hardware. The Nintendo DS at a historic 154 million sales – the second best-selling video game console ever, only just behind Sony’s PS2 – potentially lies within reach. However, a year-on-year decline of over 21% in Switch sales may suggest that the platform could run out of steam before breaking those totals.

Nintendo has also revised down its previous forecast for the rest of the financial year with an expectation of 3% slower sales.

Combined with comments that Nintendo is skipping this year’s E3 because it lacks any significant software launches for the second half of this year (something that today’s financial report seemingly confirms), and space for the Nintendo Switch’s long-discussed successor definitely seems to be opening up at some point over the next year.
